(Columbia, MO) – The Missouri Department of Conservation’s nature camps for women allow participants to stop and smell the fresh air…and maybe the roses. The all-day camps will be at the new Boone County Nature School in Columbia this week.
Campers can see the beauty that nature has to offer while learning a variety of outdoor activities.
“The nature school itself is a beautiful property, said Maddie Fennewald, a media specialist with the Department of Conservation. “And so, participants for these events, they’re going to learn about archery. They’re going to learn about fishing and kayaking. It’s got hiking areas.”

The camps are not only free of charge, but they are also free of judgement.
“We’ll provide instruction. We’ll provide the materials and we’ll have staff who are trained to answer any questions. So it’s really a low-effort event for you to come to because you don’t have to have prior knowledge,” according to Fennewald.
Outdoor equipment and lunch are provided.
The camps can also be a fun outing with girlfriends who are along for the ride to kick back and try something different.
It’s best to leave the designer clothing and accessories at home. Fennewald advises participants to dress for the weather and environment.
The camps are mostly rain or shine. Bug spray, sunglasses, sunscreen, a water bottle, a change of clothes, and a beach towel are good ideas.

If snakes, spiders, and other creatures in the wild are not your thing, a nature camp might help you to conquer your fears.
“Wildlife typically doesn’t want to be around us,” she said. “When you’re spending time in nature, you are in their home and respect that they’re there. Watch from a distance – don’t interact.”
