School bus inspection reports for Missouri K-trhough-12 schools are in.

Lt. Eric Brown with the Missouri State Highway Patrol told Missourinet it takes a long time to complete inspections for the thousands of buses across the state.

“So, it is a two, three-month process that is managed by our Driver and Vehicle Safety Division, said Brown. They’re looking at all different things. From the brake systems, bumpers, the crossing control arms, fuel systems, to the mirrors, seat belts. A lot of different things they are looking at through these inspections that being sure that they are all in good condition and functioning loke they are supposed to help keep our children safe.”

Of the thousands of buses examined, 799 were rated as defective upon initial inspection.

“A lot of times on the buses that are found to be defective, what may be wrong or the issue on that bus Is often times fixed while the inspections are still on site, said Brown. And that bus is often times fixed while the inspections are still on site. And that bus is brought back through for a second inspection, and it’s placed back into service. It’s still noted as defective because it had an issue that was wrong with it at that point in time.”

Brown said buses with identified defective components require repair within ten days.
