Abortions in Missouri are on pause.
The Missouri Supreme Court ruled Tuesday that a lower court applied the wrong standard in previous rulings that allowed abortions to resume after voters passed Amendment 3 last November. Missouri enacted a near-total abortion ban in 2022, minutes after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade.
While Missouri’s near-total ban was officially overturned by Amendment 3, Attorney General Andrew Bailey began pushing back against the removal of the ban.
Tuesday’s ruling ordered Judge Jerri Zhang to vacate her earlier orders and reevaluate the case using the standards the court laid out.
The Attorney General’s office argued that Planned Parenthood did not sufficiently prove women were harmed without temporary blocks on the broad swath of laws and regulations on abortion services and providers.
