U.S. Sen. Eric Schmitt, R-Missouri, is expressing hope that President Trump can broker a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine.
“But it is important, I think, that both parties are serious…(that) both the Russians and the Ukrainians are serious about getting a lasting peace here. This can’t go on forever,” Schmitt told Missourinet. “It’s effectively — now it’s a meat grinder. It’s terrible. You’ve got thousands of people dying every single week.”
But Schmitt also supports Trump’s plans for America to step away from world conflicts.
“Again, his trip in the Middle East, he gave a really important speech in Saudi Arabia where he talked about how, you know, our days of nation building and being the world’s policemen, those are over,” Schmitt said. “We’re going to operate from what’s in the core interest of the United States of America — protect the homeland, focus on China, (and) build relationships around the world.”
Schmitt, a Republican, sits on the U.S. Senate Armed Services Committee.
