People in St. Louis and southeast Missouri’s Scott County are cleaning up tornado wreckage today from storms that smashed through Friday – killing at least seven people.

An EF-3 tornado killed at least five people and injured some 38 people in St. Louis. In Scott County, at least two people were killed and several others have injuries that range from minor to severe.

In St. Louis, the storm ruined or damaged roughly 5,000 homes, businesses, and other buildings. It caused an estimated $1 billion in damage – knocking power out to about 90,000 people at the height of the storm.

The Scott County twister damaged or destroyed 15 to 20 homes, snapped many trees and other property. The National Weather Service has not yet determined the strength of the tornado.

Gov. Mike Kehoe, who grew up in St. Louis, toured the city’s wreckage on Saturday. St. Louis has issued a local emergency to help with rescue and recovery.

“Missouri Task Force One and their 84 members were deployed,” said Kehoe. “We’ve had several fire search and rescue teams that are deployed from community fire districts that have come together here. We’re putting all hands on deck to make sure that we can assist the city and local authorities as much as possible.”

Task Force One and first responders have completed their door-to-door searches looking for victims.

“First responders, both fire and police, have been incredible heroes in this moment,” said Kehoe. “And this is when you really see the goodness of Missouri, when you see these men and women step up and help their friends and neighbors.”

U.S. Senator Eric Schmitt, of the St. Louis area of Glendale, toured the St. Louis tornado’s aftermath over the weekend.

“It is a reminder of how dangerous things can get pretty quickly with Mother Nature,” said Schmitt. “And so, I think the message here is that we’re all very united from the federal, state and local level, to make sure that people who have been injured or that damage get the help that they need.”

St. Louis is investigating reports of the emergency sirens not sounding on Friday.

The Red Cross has set up shelters in the St. Louis area and is helping with food and shelter.

St. Louis is asking for donations of tarps, wood, screws, boards, and gloves, to help with the cleanup.

Community donations and volunteering are encouraged through the United Way of Greater St. Louis, Red Cross, Convoy of Hope, and local food banks.
