Two tornadoes hit Scott County in southern Missouri last Friday, killing two people and injuring multiple people.
According to Scott County Sheriff Derick Wheetley, an EF-3 tornado stayed in a straight line and was on the ground for about 16 minutes.
“The EF-3 kind of stayed in a straight line, he told Missourinet. “It caught an area out by the dragstrip there in Sikeston that had some populated homes, and it probably wiped out 30 homes. Some are standing. Everything in the direct path were, its unrecognizable anymore. And we did have another one shortly after to our north. It was an EF-1. And it was just briefly on the ground.”
Currently several of the tornado victims remain in the hospital in stable condition, according to Sheriff Wheetley.
He encourages anyone wanting to help to reach out to the Red Cross.
“Because several areas are without water, power. The Scott County R-IV School District in Benton, Thomas W. Kelly School is doing fundraisers, because that affected their school district. They actually canceled school for Monday and Tuesday, and they’ll wrap up their school year Wednesday. You know water is always a big thing, because several areas are without water, power.”
Anyone wanting to help can reach out to the American Red Cross at redcross.org or call the Scott County Sheriff’s Office at 573-545-3525.
