U.S. Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Missouri, has misgivings about Qatar gifting President Donald Trump a luxury jumbo jet.
“I could think of a lot more things that Qatar could do for the United States than giving us a plane. We can build our own planes,” Hawley told Missourinet. “But what Qatar could do for us is they could quit harboring Islamic terrorists who are trying to kill Americans. Quit trying to put spies in our universities, which Qatar has also been doing. ”
The Middle Eastern nation had given safe haven to top leaders of Hamas for several years. Multiple media reports claim they left the country in November within days of Trump’s re-election as president.
Hawley also said that Qatar should invest in American industry and otherwise work to build close ties with the United States.
“I saw they did just put in a huge order, Qatar did, for a bunch of American-made planes,” he said. “That’s more like it.”
Hawley did not mention what kind of planes they are or which American company built them.
The president, meanwhile, has said it would be “stupid” not to accept the Boeing 747-8, which has been dubbed a “palace in the sky.” Trump plans to use the plane as the new Air Force One.
