(Lexington, MO) – A federal agency says a deadly house explosion last month near Kansas City was caused in part by damage to an unlocated, unmarked gas line.
Five-year-old Alistair Lamb was killed in the April 9 explosion in Lexington, while his father, Jacob Cunningham, and sister were critically injured.
The National Transportation Safety Board’s initial report says Liberty Utilities sent someone to mark buried utilities before the blast, but the uncapped gas main section involved in the incident was not identified or marked. After a worker laying fiber-optic cable struck the line, a nearby business was evacuated but other nearby buildings and homes were not.
The victims’ home was destroyed and two others were damaged.
The NTSB continues to investigate the incident.
