U.S. Sen. Eric Schmitt, R-Missouri, indicates he does not think Trump’s “big, beautiful budget bill” will include cuts to Social Security, Medicare, or Medicaid.
“I don’t think any of those things are on the table,” Schmitt told Missourinet. “I don’t support any cuts to benefits for Social Security, Medicare, or Medicaid. That’s not really what’s being talked about.”
He does believe that some reforms are needed to the Medicaid system.
“There is a lot of waste, there’s a lot of fraud in that system. So, I do think that’s something that we’re looking at,” Schmitt said. “I think we’ve got an opportunity for spending reform, and we also want to protect those who are most vulnerable.”
Schmitt also said Republicans in both chambers of Congress are “pretty unified” in their desire to cut the size of the federal government.
Schmitt’s Missouri colleague, U.S. Senator Josh Hawley, has said he will not vote for any budget bill that cuts Medicare, Medicaid, or Social Security.
House Speaker Mike Johnson is on record as wanting a final version of the federal budget on President Trump’s desk by Memorial Day.
