China is actively recruiting American scientists who’ve been fired since President Donald Trump took office. U.S. Sen. Eric Schmitt, R-Missouri, said it’s no surprise the Communist government in Beijing is trying to bring them onboard.
“I’m on the Armed Services Committee, and a lot of the briefings that we get are just really disturbing, the activities that China has,” he told Missourinet. “This is not some benevolent country that’s just a trading partner, they have designs on world domination. They have a bigger Navy than we have now. They’ve increased military spending 500% in 10 years.”
One news report said that China is especially interested in hiring American scientists with expertise in Artificial Intelligence.
“They’re doing a lot of things,” Schmitt said. “They’re sending spies over here. They’re trying to pirate our tech. They are infiltrating communication systems. They are infiltrating critical infrastructure. They’ve hacked the State Department’s emails. They’ve hacked phones of government officials.”
Many countries, including the United States, try to recruit scientists from around the world. But the FBI calls China the most “prolific” sponsor of talent recruitment programs and that the U.S. is one of its main targets.
