(Jefferson City, MO) – A traveler to southern Missouri’s Taney County has the measles. It’s the state’s first confirmed case of measles this year.

A news release from the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services says the patient is a child whose vaccination status has not yet been verified. The patient is also associated with recent international travel.

The Department of Health also says there is no indication of widespread exposure and that known contacts have been identified.

Symptoms include fever, cough, runny nose, red and watery eyes, followed by red spots that appear on a person’s face and then spread downward across the rest of the body.

People who think they have measles or may have been exposed to measles should isolate themselves and call their health care provider before arriving to be tested. It is important to let the provider know that the patient may have measles and to get instructions on how to come to the office for diagnosis without exposing other people to the virus.

The Department says the best way to prevent getting sick is to be immunized with two doses of a measles-containing vaccine, which is primarily administered as the combination measles-mumps-rubella or MMR vaccine.
