Hit up the gas pump lately? Seeing bigger numbers than you’ve been used to? AAA Missouri’s Nick Chabarria has an explanation.
“Gas prices have been trending upwards over the last several weeks, and that’s largely due to the seasonal shift over from winter blend gasoline to summer blend gasoline, which is a little bit more costly to produce,” Chabarria told KMOX Radio in St. Louis.
According to Chabarria, the additives in summer blend add about 15 cents to each gallon. Right now, the St. Louis area average price is $2.95 and the Missouri statewide average is $2.92.
“Really, the difference between the two blends is additives that are added to the fuel mix for summer blend gasoline, which makes it less susceptible to evaporate in warmer temperatures,” he said.
He added that we’re in the period between spring break and summer vacations, so demand is relatively low, meaning prices still have room to rise. Missouri gas prices are up a cent over last week, but are still 33 cents cheaper than this time last year.
