Anthem Blue Cross-Blue Shield has broken off negotiations with MU Health Care and their contract will expire Tuesday. Around 90,000 Missouri patients will lose in-network coverage.
Loss of coverage includes employer-employee health plans, and individual plans through HealthLink and the Affordable Care Act.
In a statement, Anthem said MU Health Care wanted a 39% increase in costs spread out over three years, which it maintains is too high. In its own statement, MU Health Care said patients may now have to pay more out of pocket to see an MU Health Care doctor or care team — or, find a new in-network doctor.
Meanwhile, MU Health Care and UnitedHealthcare agreed last week to an extension as both sides continue to work toward a new contract. The extension applies to UnitedHealthcare commercial members who get their insurance through their employer or the Affordable Care Act marketplace, in addition to Medicare Advantage plans.
MU Health Care serves patients from 114 Missouri counties.
