Boeing will build the next-generation of U.S. fighter jets, thanks to a $20 billion contract announced Friday by President Trump. The contract is expected to provide a big boost to Missouri’s economy.
Last year, Boeing announced a $1.8 billion expansion at its plant near St. Louis-Lambert International Airport specifically geared toward building combat aircraft. The F-47’s design is a closely guarded secret, but Reuters reports that it will likely include stealth technology, cutting-edge engines, and advanced sensors.
Reaction from Missouri’s elected leaders has been swift.
“Today’s announcement is a momentous day both for St. Louis and the country as the production of next generation fighter jets will be in the Show Me State,” said U.S. Sen. Eric Schmitt, R-Missouri. “This program is key for the United States to maintain and expand our air superiority and will bring thousands of new jobs to Missouri. These next-gen fighters will be crucial as we face new challenges that will undoubtedly come from our greatest adversary, China.”
U.S. Rep. Ann Wagner, R-Mo. 2nd District, called the announcement “amazing” for the St. Louis region and the nation’s security.
“Boeing has already made massive investments in Missouri to support next generation fighter aircraft and good paying jobs in our communities,” Wagner said. “I want to thank President Trump for his leadership in trusting the hardworking men and women in our great state to build the F-47, which will undoubtedly be the most advanced stealth fighter jet in the world.”
Boeing in St. Louis announced it will be hiring a couple of hundred workers as it also continues to build other fighter planes there.
