The Trump Administration is investigating Washington University in St. Louis for allegedly continuing to embrace diversity, equity, and inclusion.

On Friday, the U.S. Department of Education announced it was investigating 45 universities across the country, including Wash U, for using “racial preferences and stereotypes in education programs and activities,” and seven others for providing “impermissible” race-based scholarships and race-based segregation. The department accuses the universities of excluding white and Asian-American students and giving other minority groups preferential treatment.

“Students must be assessed according to merit and accomplishment, not prejudged by the color of their skin,” U.S. Education Secretary Linda McMahon said in a statement. “We will not yield on this commitment.”

The investigation into Wash U and other universities comes one month after the Trump Administration issued a warning that preferential treatment could result in a loss of federal funding.

Missourinet contacted Washington University via email and phone for a response, but have not yet heard back from the school.

According to Washington University’s racial breakdown of its student body, the fall of 2024 consisted of 35% white students, 27.4% international students, 14% Asian students, 9% Hispanic students, 7.1% Black students, 4.6% of students with two or more races, 2.8% unknown race, and 0.1% American Indian students.
