The U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee is scheduled to consider on Thursday the nomination of former Missouri Solicitor General D. John Sauer as the next U.S. Solicitor General.

Missouri Senator Josh Hawley is backing the nomination.

“John Sauer is a multi-generation Missourian,” Hawley told Missourinet. “His family has been in the St. Louis area for years and years and years and years and years. He’s a fantastic attorney. He clerked for Justice (Antonin) Scalia on the U.S. Supreme Court. He was a federal prosecutor for five years, and then he served under me when I was (Missouri) Attorney General.”

Sauer also worked as Solicitor General under then-Missouri Attorney General Eric Schmitt. Hawley said Sauer will do a “fantastic” job.

“For six years in total, he was the Solicitor General of the State of Missouri and had a tremendous win record in state court and federal court, including the (U.S.) Supreme Court,” he said.

But during his confirmation hearing two weeks ago, Senate Democrats questioned whether Sauer would put President Donald Trump ahead of the U.S. Constitution. Sauer previously was one of Trump’s personal lawyers in a federal criminal case that granted Trump presidential immunity for official acts taken leading up to the 2020 election.
