An effort to reinstate the state’s abortion ban could be up for Missouri Senate debate soon after passing out of committee. Sponsored by Sen. Adam Schnelting, R-St. Charles County, it would ban abortion but would allow exceptions up to 12 weeks of pregnancy for survivors of rape and incest who report the assault to police.
Schnelting said that Missourians who voted to approve Amendment 3 last November were lied to.
“They were told that if they didn’t pass Amendment 3, women would be dying in our hospitals from an inability to obtain the care that they need for ectopic pregnancies, miscarriage care, and medical emergencies,” Schnelting said. “While that was a compelling argument for many of the folks who love their daughters and their wives, it was also an argument that simply was false.”
Sen. Maggie Nurrenbern, D-Kansas City, opposes abortion bans.
“Despite whatever laws are in place, they do not work,” she said. “People will find care, or they will take that care into their own hands.”
Fellow Republican Sen. Mike Moon, R-Ash Grove, stepped down from the committee, at least temporarily. Moon told Missourinet he opposes abortion of any kind but he promised not to block the measure so that voters could potentially decide for themselves.
“How can I or anyone else say just because someone committed a crime against a woman and the result was the baby conceived that that baby committed a crime that would require death? I’d say the man who is the one who committed a crime, he should be punished, but not the child,” Moon said.
Yvonne Chong with the Missouri Democratic Party said abortion bans don’t work.
“In fact, after Dobbs (decision), I think 2023, the first time the number of abortions went over one million with all the bans,” she said. “With all the states completely banning it.”
If the legislature passes the resolution, voters would be asked to repeal Missouri’s constitutional amendment restoring abortions.
