U.S. Senator Eric Schmitt said he’s aware of the closing of the soybean research laboratory at the University of Missouri-Columbia.
The Soybean Innovation Lab was funded by USAID, which has had much of its funding slashed by DOGE, the new agency created by President Trump and run by billionaire Elon Musk. Schmitt told Missourinet that USAID has been wasting federal dollars.
“We’ve got to get a handle on these people who don’t think they’re accountable at all and, you know, give money for Guatemalans’ sex changes and DEI trainings in Burma,” he said.
But the soybean lab and research program also got the axe. When asked if there would be any effort to reopen the lab, Schmitt answered: “You know, we’ll look into that. I guess that’s the best answer I can give you.”
The soybean lab has already ceased operations, though it’s officially slated to close April 15.
