There have not been any mass firings of federal workers in the St. Louis area, yet. But there have been several Kansas City IRS workers fired.

U.S. Rep. Wesley Bell, of the St. Louis area, told Missourinet he’s monitoring the situation. He said cutting the federal workforce will have little to no impact on reducing the national debt.

“You talk about the percentage of our budget that makes up federal employees, it is microscopic. So, the narrative that cutting these jobs is going to somehow get us out of debt is just a misnomer,” he said. “It’s just completely off base, and it’s a lie, to be perfectly honest.”

The First District Democratic congressman sits on the U.S. House Committee on Oversight.

“Now we are in the minority, and so we don’t have the subpoena power, but we do have our voices,” he said. “We’re going to keep pushing to get that message out, so folks understand the real narrative of how this impacts regular working families.”

Members of the Trump Administration have been quoted by Bloomberg News as saying the job cuts are part of a mandate from the American people to attack a “bloated, corrupt federal bureaucracy.”
