President Trump’s outline for a federal budget is in the hands of the U.S. Senate after passing the House last week. Missouri U.S. Senator Josh Hawley told Missourinet there will be some changes from the House version, but he also held firm on Social Security.
“One of the things the President has been very clear about, which I think is important in this context, is he said he wants no cuts to Medicaid, Medicare or Social Security,” Hawley said. “I think that’s a very important set of guidelines to adhere to, and that’s certainly how I’m going to be focusing my attention.”
House Republicans have been pushing for $2 trillion in spending cuts to “mandatory” federal spending, which includes Medicare and Medicaid. Cuts are also being proposed for SNAP benefits, traditionally known as “food stamps.” That proposal is part of a proposed $230 billion cut to federal agriculture spending.
The U.S. House budget blueprint, called the “big, beautiful budget bill” by President Trump, also includes a $100 billion increase in defense spending and an additional $90 billion for homeland security.
