A Missouri Senate committee could vote Tuesday on legislation that would limit transgender students in public K-12 schools to bathrooms based on their sex at birth. It’s sponsored by Sen. Travis Fitzwater, R-Holts Summit.

“(It) ensures in our state statutes that it allows school districts to say there’s a there’s a male bathroom (and) there’s a female bathroom. And biological males and females have to go into those corresponding bathrooms,” Fitzwater said. “It also gives them all the authority to ensure that there’s other spaces for those…who may be dealing with gender dysphoria.”

Several people testified against the bill at a hearing last week, saying it would violate the rights of transgender students and threaten their health and safety. Michael Walk of St. Louis County is the father of a transgender girl.

“If my daughter were to enter a men’s room, it would create a stir,” he testified. “She would immediately attract attention, and it would be obvious why. Given the hyper sexualization many people project on transgender people, there would be very obvious risks to her personal safety.”

No one testified in favor of the bill. The State Senate Education Committee is scheduled to meet Tuesday at 8:00 a.m. at the Missouri Capitol.
