U.S. Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Missouri, is again sponsoring legislation to create an Inspector General post to audit federal aid to Ukraine.

The Inspector General would have the authority to examine all military and non-military aid sent to the war-torn country and would answer to both the Secretary of Defense and Secretary of State. Hawley said in a press release that American taxpayers shouldn’t have to wonder where billions in aid to Ukraine went and what’s being currently funded. He sponsored a similar bill in 2023 that was rejected by the then-Democratic majority in the U.S. Senate.

According to the Council on Foreign Relations, Congress has approved around $175 billion in both military and non-military aid to Ukraine since Russia invaded the country three years ago.

Hawley’s legislation has been filed despite President Donald Trump recently firing several inspectors General.
