A winter storm warning has been issued for all of northern Missouri, the Kansas City area, and parts of western and central Missouri.
Four to ten inches of snow are expected north of Interstate 44. Most of southwestern and central Missouri and the St. Louis area are under a Winter Weather Advisory – up to four inches of snow and sleet, and up to 2/10ths of an inch of ice are possible.
Most of southeastern Missouri is not included in either the warning or advisory. But the National Weather Service is predicting rain mixed with freezing rain and sleet for the region, including Cape Girardeau, Sikeston, and Poplar Bluff. Up to four inches of rain are possible across much of southeastern Missouri, which could lead to flooding along area rivers.
A winter storm is on track to bring heavy snow, sleet, & freezing rain to the region on WED. The boundaries between these precipitation types are still not certain, but widespread travel impacts are expected regardless. National Weather Service Meteorologist Chris Kimble said that road conditions are going to be dangerous.
“We are expecting several inches of snow. Where you have that winter storm warning, we’re expecting anywhere from 4 – 10 inches,” he told Missourinet. “Further southeast, we do see an area of sleet mixing in, which will reduce the snow totals there, more like 1 – 3 inches in the advisory area. Even further southeast from there, there is some freezing rain as well.”
Gov. Mike Kehoe has signed an executive order activating the Missouri National Guard for state and local response efforts if needed during the winter storm. The order also waives certain service requirements for commercial transport vehicles for residential heating fuel.
Kimble said if you don’t have to drive to work on Wednesday, stay home.
“In the Kansas City area, it will have already been going for several hours,” Kimble said. “So, I would expect that roads would be impacted. Further east, it will be beginning during the morning. So, you’ll see snow begin to accumulate through the morning hours to a depth of several inches by the time you get to the end of the day.”
As a precaution, drivers are encouraged to stay off the roads. If travel is necessary, do so with extreme caution and check MoDOT’s online Traveler Information Map for the latest road conditions.
