The Philadelphia Eagles prevented the Kansas City Chiefs from completing its quest for the NFL’s first-ever three-peat. The Eagles celebrate their second Lombardi trophy in franchise history after a 40-22 win over the Chiefs.
Philadelphia’s suffocating defense stymied Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs offense. The only team record the Chiefs set came in the first half when they became the first team in more than a century to allow more points in the first half, than yards gained. The Chiefs went into halftime down 24-0 after being held to just 23 yards of total offense. Mahomes was sacked a career-high six times and pressured 16 times during his 42 pass attempts. Give credit to Philly’s defensive front four. The Eagles applied all that pressure without dialing up one blitz the entire game.
Mahomes threw a 24-yard TD pass to Xavier Worthy to avoid the shutout, and in the fourth quarter two more TDs…one to DeAndre Hopkins and a second to Worthy.
One record that was set in the defeat came from Travis Kelce. While having just four catches in the game, he passed Jerry Rice for the most receptions in Super Bowl history now totaling 35. Rice had 33.
The Green Bay Packers remain the only franchise in the NFL to win three straight championships having accomplished the feat in the 1920s and again in the late 1960s including Super Bowl I.
