When you think of caller ID spoofing, you may think of people making misleading phone calls with bad intentions. Rep. Mitch Boggs, R-La Russell, wants to punish people who do that by creating the Caller ID Anti-Spoofing Act.
He told Show Me Today that he is working with AT&T to develop ways of catching the suspect making the call.
“Somebody runs a red light,” Boggs said. “You know who the car owner is because you have their license number, but who’s driving the car? So, we’re actually looking for who’s driving the car, here, we can’t just find the car owner.”
The first offense would be a class A misdemeanor, and any subsequent offenses would be a class E felony.
“We’re actually trying to go after the bad guy. So, that’s what makes it hard,” he said. “The bad guy always hides in a group of people and many times, they pick good people to hide amongst. So, we’re just trying to sort them out, find a way to pinpoint them, and identify them.”
Under the bill, victims could sue for damages and the Missouri Attorney General’s Office could get involved in such cases. Another provision of the bill adds business subscribers to the No-Call List.
A House committee could soon vote on the bill.
