Another artic blast is on its way to the Show Me State. Melissa Delia with the National Weather Service in St. Louis said the coldest air of the season will begin moving in on Saturday.
“The overnight lows through this period are going to be near zero across mid-Missouri, and areas…across northern Missouri, we’re looking at lows potentially below zero,” she told Missourinet. “This cold is going to last a couple of days into the midweek period.”
The cold and windy conditions will be dangerous for those outside without proper clothing.
“Our wind chills during this period are going to be quite cold,” Delia said. “During the daytime hours, we’re looking at wind chills in the single digits. So that’s what it’s going to feel like outside for folks. During the nighttime hours, or early morning, we’re looking at wind chills in the negative digits.”
Highs could be in the teens and 20s and lows could hover around zero with locations near the Iowa border possibly dropping below zero.
“Always want to remind people to dress appropriately,” she said. “So, multiple layers that will keep their skin covered, especially with wind chills in the mix, we definitely want as much exposed skin covered as possible.”
The cold poses an increased risk of hypothermia and frostbite to exposed skin. The National Weather Service advises drivers to keep a cold weather survival kit in their vehicles.
“Keep an eye on elderly friends and neighbors,” she added. “Just make sure that they have the resources that they need and (cover) any exposed pipes or faucets that might (cause) damage to pipes if the cold gets in them and starts causing water to freeze.”
People are being advised to dress in layers and to keep an eye on pets while outdoors.
Snow is not expected through early next week.
