New year, new Congress. Lawmakers get back to work today on Capitol Hill, with the first order of U.S. House business being the election of a speaker.

Speaker Mike Johnson, R-LA, will need every House Republican’s support that he can get because they have a slim majority.

Southwest Missouri Republican Congressman Eric Burlison told Show Me Today that he hopes to see a “Mike Johnson 3.0.”

“I’ve seen Johnson 1.0, where before he became a speaker. I’m not exactly thrilled with the results of Johnson 2.0 under a Biden Administration and a Chuck Schumer Senate. I think that that made it for a very difficult challenge for Johnson. Sadly, there were moments where I think we could have fought harder and got more conservative wins,” said Burlison.

President-elect Donald Trump backs Johnson as speaker, so that may increase Johnson’s chances of remaining in the top spot.

“Given the dynamic with Trump coming in and with the Republican Senate, there won’t be any excuses to do the right thing,” says Burlison. “And so, I’m hopeful that Johnson 3.0 will be a more conservative, results-oriented outcome that benefits the American people and doesn’t frustrate Republicans.”

Meanwhile, west-central Missouri Congressman Mark Alford backs Johnson. In a Facebook post, Alford said that Johnson “is the leader we need.” Alford said Johnson is, “working to unite our conference and deliver for America.”

Early Friday morning, 2nd District Congresswoman Ann Wagner endorsed Johnson, saying on X (formerly Twitter) that he “has earned our full support for Speaker.”
