Missouri U.S. Senator Eric Schmitt is not throwing his support behind a certain side in a debate over a long-running visa work program.

The H-1B visa program, which began in 1990, provides temporary work visas to highly educated professional from other countries in “specialty occupations” that require at least a bachelor’s degree or higher.

The difference of opinion about whether the program should stay or go has turned viral on social media. President-elect Donald Trump and tech billionaire Elon Musk are butting heads with fellow Department of Government Efficiency head Vivek Ramaswamy and other MAGA loyalists.

Many hospitals use the program to fill physician, lab tech, and registered nurses positions. The visas are also popular among U.S. tech companies who need to fill jobs – something that Musk has brought to light.

During an appearance on Fox News Sunday, Schmitt instead said the H-1B system needs to be reformed. He cited some companies that are “undercutting wages” by hiring international workers for less money than they’d have to pay Americans.

Companies who use this program pay thousands of dollars to sponsor foreign workers.
