He’s had buildings and a bridge named in his honor. Now, former U.S. Sen. Roy Blunt has been inducted into the Hall of Famous Missourians.
A bronze bust of Blunt joins 53 other statues of famous Missourians in the hall.
Blunt, a Republican, said none of his political accomplishments happened by himself.
“I’ve been really lucky, and I appreciate the good luck I’ve had and the good fortune I’ve had to work for Missourians over an incredible 50 years now of public service,” he said.
He served as secretary of state and then represented Missouri in Congress from 1997 to 2023.
Blunt told Missourinet what he thinks is his greatest political accomplishments.
“In the last decade, Senator Stabenow from Michigan and I worked a lot on mental health issues,” said Blunt. “I think that maybe has some of the biggest national impact in how we discuss mental health and also how we understand the importance of treating mental health like all other health.”
Blunt has also been influential in boosting federal funding to community health centers and medical research for the National Institutes of Health.
He said he’s proud of national security accomplishments he was able to secure for Missouri.
“What we were able to do with the geospatial opportunity in St. Louis was a big thing, I think, and has big potential for Missouri’s economy,” said Blunt.
The National Geospatial Intelligence Agency is building a massive campus in St. Louis, where more than 3,100 workers will be located.
Blunt is the current president of the State Historical Society of Missouri.
The Hall of Famous Missourians is located in the state Capitol.
