A Missouri man who was reported missing from central Europe earlier this year has been found alive in Syria.
Travis Timmerman, 29, of Dallas County had been staying in Hungary when he vanished. He was added to the Missouri State Highway Patrol’s Missing Persons Clearinghouse, where he’s listed as Pete Timmerman.
National media outlets report that he was among thousands of people set free from Syrian jails after rebel forces toppled the Assad regime days ago. Timmerman was found wandering the streets of Damascus barefoot, and he talked to some national and international media outlets. He said he traveled to Syria on foot as part of a spiritual pilgrimage and was arrested for entering the country illegally.
As for his time in jail, he said it was not too bad for him.
“There wasn’t a hard part. It wasn’t too bad. It wasn’t bad,” he told CBS News. “I was never beaten.”
Timmerman said, though, he could hear other prisoners being beaten and tortured.
“The only really bad part was that I couldn’t go to the bathroom when I wanted to,” he said. “I was only let out three times a day to go to the bathroom, so that was quite the hardship.”
Timmerman told CBS News that he was provided with food and water while he was jailed.
