Several efforts by Republicans are underway to address the overturning of Missouri’s near-total abortion ban. A majority of Missouri voters cast a ballot last minute in favor of restoring abortion rights.

Sen. Mike Moon, R-Ash Grove, wants to prohibit tax credits for employers who pay for workers to get an abortion.

“If a developing human child is in the womb and an employer wants to fund the termination of that life, the murderer of that child, I don’t think they should be also enriched in other forms by the state through tax credits,” he told Missourinet.

Moon’s proposal states that payments for health insurance premiums are not considered payments for abortions.

“If, for example, Company A is in the business of whatever it might be that actually qualifies for tax credits from the state,” he said. “If they, in turn, began to or continue paying for abortions in the state or out of state, then their tax credit eligibility would be ended.”

Businesses that receive tax credits in Missouri include manufacturing and production, housing and real estate, agricultural, and energy.

“I think most of us understand that if there’s a life that’s being snuffed out, that’s not healthcare,” he said. “So, I believe that it’s not prudent for the state to honor a tax credit initiative for any company that provides the killing of a child.”

Missourinet reached out to the Missouri Chamber of Commerce and Industry who chose not to comment on the proposed bill.
