Missouri Congressman Emanuel Cleaver said he’s “very, very nervous and concerned” about Artificial Intelligence’s growing grip on American life. The Democrat from Kansas City laid out some of those concerns during a U.S. House hearing this week.
“We’ve been warned for some years now – if we were paying attention – we were warned by ‘I Robot,’ ‘The Matrix,’ ‘The Terminator,’ and most fascinatingly, the movie ‘Her.’ The heartbroken man ends up falling in love with an operating system with an enchanting voice,” Cleaver said.
Artificial intelligence, otherwise known as AI, involves machines doing tasks that are typically completed by people. Think of Siri, Alexa, robots, and driverless cars.
Cleaver acknowledged that AI may have the potential to “democratize opportunities,” but that it comes with “great risks.” He also mentioned his son’s work in the entertainment industry.
“My son is an actor and they were on a picket (line) last summer,” he said. “The number one issue that they were concerned about was AI, and I’ve seen some of the things that can happen with AI.”
Cleaver said more than half of all Americans have tried out generative AI, which can create new content. Traditional AI was created for specific tasks and contains built-in rules and algorithms.
