Fewer deer were bagged by young hunters during the second half of Missouri’s youth firearm season compared to the same period a year ago.
Part two of youth firearm season took place from Black Friday, Nov. 29th, through Sunday, Dec. 1st, during which hunters between the ages of six and 15 killed 2,530 deer. That number is down from last year’s second half youth firearm season when 3,617 deer were killed.
Meanwhile, 11,424 deer were killed by hunters during the Chronic Wasting Disease portion of Missouri’s firearm season, which ran from Wednesday, Nov. 27th through Sunday Dec. 1st. That’s slightly lower than last year’s CWD season in which 11,707 deer were killed.
Although there have been no cases of humans contracting CWD, people are warned not to eat deer meat from an infected animal as tests are ongoing. The purpose of CWD firearm season is to slow the spread of the disease, according to the Missouri Department of Conservation. Hunters are required to bring the heads of any deer killed during CWD season to a testing station to see if it had Chronic Wasting Disease.
Missouri’s archery deer season continues through January 15th. The late antlerless portion of firearm season begins Saturday, Dec. 7th and runs through the 15th in open counties. Alternative methods deer season is scheduled Dec. 28th through Jan. 15th. Contact the Missouri Department of Conservation for more information.
