With more hunting permits allowed this deer season in Missouri, there’s a place to put that meat to good use. Outdoor Writer John Winkelman told KMOX Radio in St. Louis that hunters in most of Missouri were allowed up to five deer tags this time around – four antlerless deer and one buck.

“Yeah, that’s a lot of venison for one person to eat, but a great way to utilize that resource is the Share The Harvest program,” he said.

Last year, Missouri’s “Share The Harvest” program collected nearly 3 quarters of a million pounds of deer meat to be given to needy families.

“You think of a pound of ground beef, how far a pound of ground beef can go in a pot of spaghetti or as four quarter pound burgers or something like that, how many families you can feed,” Winkelman said.

Before donating, the deer can be tested for chronic wasting disease free of charge.

Missouri’s firearms deer hunting season ended November 26.
