Despite voters overturning Missouri’s near-total abortion ban, Republican leaders in the state Legislature are promising to push back. Sen. Cindy O’Laughlin, R-Shelbina, argues against the notion that “the voters have spoken.”

“To say that the voters have spoken, yes, they have, and it was darn near at a 50-50-split,” she told Missourinet. “Our legislature is very pro-life, we, on the Republican side. You will see, I’m not sure of the timeline, but you will see efforts to protect unborn children.”

Sen. Tracy McCreery, D-Olivette, said it’s not a partisan battle, adding that “hundreds of thousands of Republican voters joined with Democratic voters and Independents to restore reproductive rights.”

O’Laughlin also said that there are provisions in the ballot measure that voters were unaware of.

“Anytime an initiative petition measure gets on the ballot, if you have watched that process, for instance, just this particular amendment, it didn’t include all of the details that are in the bill,” she said. “That is something that we do need to address.”

O’Laughlin, however, did not mention which details she was referring to.

Amendment 3 passed 52% to 48%.
