Missouri still has a shortage of snowplow and salt truck drivers to clear the roads this winter. Despite that, state Department of Transportation Director Ed Hassinger said the agency is ready for winter.
“Certainly, we still have that deficit in drivers for our trucks. We’re tapping every resource we have,” Hassinger said. “I will tell you the good news is the commission put in place the market adjustment a few years ago, and we have stopped the bleeding of folks leaving the department.”
He said MoDOT has 200 additional maintenance workers than it did this time last year.
“Like to have another 200 on top of that, and we still are hiring kind of what we call emergency help that would come in just for snowstorms. That recruiting effort is going on as we speak,” said Hassinger. “So, I think we’re going to be in good shape for this winter. Our team’s prepared, and we’ve got a plan, regardless of what happens, to move people around.”
Last winter, the department was down several hundred snow plow drivers and other drivers to help with its winter weather operations.
