A majority of Missouri voters wants to make many abortions legal again, but Republicans could pull out all the stops in the next legislative session.

Senate Majority Leader Tony Luetkemeyer, R-Parkville, told Missourinet that Republicans will try to “pull back” on some of the more “radical” aspects of Amendment 3. He said the voter-approved proposal failed in most Missouri counties.

State Sen. Senator Tracy McCreery, D-Olivette, said Amendment 3 still passed 52% to 48%.

“Hundreds of thousands of Republican voters joined in with Democratic voters and Independents to restore reproductive rights, full stop. So, we need to remember that this wasn’t just a partisan battle,” McCreery told Missourinet. “I, along with a lot of other colleagues, will be holding up our right hand and taking a duty to uphold the will of the people, including we will take an oath to protect our state constitution. And that doesn’t mean we get to pick and choose what we support and don’t support.”

She said that the general election was a landslide year for Republicans, yet a majority of voters ended Missouri’s abortion ban.

“There was a clear and convincing win for Amendment 3,” said McCreery. “Anybody who had their name on the ballot as a candidate on November 5th would have been glad to win by that margin – by 52-48.”

Another Republican argument being made is that the pro-choice side had millions more in donations than the anti-abortion side did.
