As the holiday season approaches, so does another chance to honor U.S. military members no longer with us.

On Saturday, December 14, more than two million volunteers and supporters will gather nationwide for Wreaths Across America Day. Christmas wreaths will be laid at the graves of veterans at some 4,600 participating sites across America, at sea, and abroad.

Stacy Laubert is one of the organizers of Wreaths Across America’s activities in Jefferson City.

“They’re just small wreaths with red ribbons placed on them. And when we place them, we place them with the ribbons up and at the headstones of the soldiers, so that there’s some uniformity and that we can take a moment just to remember the fallen heroes,” Laubert told Missourinet.

Wreaths Across America began at Arlington National Cemetery more than 30 years ago and has since spread nationwide.

Jeff Hilke manages Hawthorn Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Jefferson City.

“It’s a project that is held to recognize and honor fallen veterans, and it is held at the same time as the ceremony at Arlington,” he said. “Depending on what time zone you’re in, it’s supposed to be held at the same time as that service in Arlington.”

Orders for wreaths are being accepted through November 20th. For more details, contact your local cemetery or visit WreathsAcrossAmerica.org.
