(Washington, D.C.) — Missouri U.S. Senator Eric Schmitt said he has removed his name from consideration for a Trump Administration cabinet position. Schmitt took to X, formerly Twitter, in a Monday post, saying that he ran for the U.S. Senate to represent the people of the Show Me State.
The former Missouri attorney general was reportedly being considered for U.S. attorney general at one point before saying he bowed out of consideration. The Republican said that he will help to select judges and work to move President-elect Donald Trump’s agenda in the U.S. Senate.
“We need America First fighters who don’t just say they support the agenda, but who are willing to stand in the breach and actually fight for it,” he said.
Can confirm.
I ran for the U.S. Senate to represent the people of the Show Me State and I’m just getting started.
The American people have given President @realDonaldTrump a mandate. A mandate to secure our border, make America energy dominant and fight for the forgotten men… https://t.co/LxHiqZMfks

Schmitt helped Trump to prepare for a presidential debate and had been stumping for Trump on the campaign trail in recent weeks. His work raised questions about whether Schmitt was aiming for the U.S. attorney general job or another cabinet position.
Schmitt’s announcement could also signal that Trump has someone else in mind for the attorney general’s job.
Missouri’s own Attorney General, Andrew Bailey, is reportedly being considered for the position.
