Vivek Malek will continue serving as Missouri’s Treasurer.
The Republican easily won Tuesday’s general election over Democrat Mark Osmack, Libertarian John Hartwig, Jr., and the Green Party’s Reagan Haase. Malek also becomes the first person of color to be elected to a statewide office in Missouri.
He told Missourinet that he has some new priorities for his first full term in office.
“Last year, we were not able to get through the FADA, which is the Foreign Adversary Divestment Act,” he said. “I’ll be pushing for that to make sure that none of our pension funds are invested in any of (America’s) adversary countries.”
Malek said he’ll also push for a mandatory course in Missouri high schools to help ensure that high school graduates are financially literate.
“To understand how finance works — what are credit cards, what a credit score is — so they understand,” he said. “Whether they are going into skilled trade or workforce or going to college, they (need to) understand how important it is to save money, how important it is to make sure how you spend (or) not go beyond your limits, how credit cards work.”
One of Malek’s top priorities for this past legislative session became law in August — the expansion of the MOBUCK$ program from $800 million to $1.2 billion a year. The program provides low-interest loans to farmers, small business owners, and local governments in Missouri.
