Several black students at two Missouri institutions are the targets of a national racist spamming trend.
A significant number of these incidents are occurring at colleges, including the University of Missouri-Columbia and Missouri State University. The details are unknown as to what was in the messages, but it appears to follow a general theme saying the recipient has been chosen to be enslaved and assigned to pick cotton on a plantation.
MU said there is no indication of a credible threat to the safety of members of the university community:
“The University of Missouri condemns this language and all forms of racism and discrimination and is committed to the safety of the university community. If you receive a text containing disparaging language, report it to our Office of Institutional Equity at [email protected]. Reports will be investigated and if individuals are identified violating our rules, they will be held accountable,” the statement read, in part.
Missouri State University in Springfield told Missourinet that the senders of the messages will face disciplinary action:
“Missouri State University has received several reports of our Black students receiving racist text messages from unknown numbers, similar to incidents reported by universities across the country. Additionally, racist graffiti was found in a bathroom on campus this afternoon. As a university, we condemn these actions and are investigating them to determine who is responsible. Those identified will face disciplinary action,” the statement read.
The Missouri-targeted reports are currently being investigated.
