A Missouri Department of Transportation worker has been killed on the job.
State Highway Patrol Sgt. Andy Bell told Missourinet that Jay Bone was part of a MoDOT crew working on a pavement resurfacing project near Sedalia on Tuesday when Bone was struck and killed by a semi.
The crash happened around 11 a.m. along State Road O, a low-volume rural road. Bone, of Smithton, was 60 years old.
He is the 140th MoDOT worker killed in the line of duty since 1932.
“Incidents like this are just a very tragic reminder of how dangerous any number of work zones are, whether it’s on an interstate, U.S. highway, Missouri route,” Bell said. “And it really, really requires 100% attention of our drivers to remain vigilant, hyper vigilant.”
The 18-year-old semi driver is from nearby Hughesville.
“There was enough evidence yesterday to suggest that the driver was not speeding, careless in nature, anything to that effect, that would warrant an application for an arrest warrant or a uniform citation, or something to that effect,” Bell said.
He said the investigation is ongoing.
“To the effect of the specifics of how many MoDOT vehicles were there and their placement, and the number of signs or cones or number of workers, I don’t have all that information, and that’s that’s part of that investigation,” he said.
Bone’s death comes less than a week after this year’s Day of Remembrance ceremony that honors fallen MoDOT employees.
