The state of Missouri is set to execute Marcellus Williams in just a few hours.
Both the Missouri Supreme Court and Gov. Mike Parson have refused to halt his scheduled execution, which is scheduled as early as 6:00 p.m. Williams has appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court, but there has been no ruling yet.
He was convicted and sentenced to death for the 1998 murder of former St. Louis Post-Dispatch reporter Felicia Gayle. He maintains he’s innocent, and St. Louis County Prosecutor Wesley Bell attempted to have his murder conviction tossed out, saying DNA evidence found on the murder weapon did not come from Williams. The state argued that the knife had been handled by prosecutors more than 20 years ago and that there is no evidence that exonerates Willliams.
