A major leak in a southeast Missouri lake has led to a call for anglers to help remove fish. Fisheries Biologist Salvador Mondragon said the leak in North County Park Lake is causing water levels to drop.
“The fish would probably not be able to survive, especially throughout the winter months because it’s so shallow and so we’re trying to allow anglers, or anybody interested in catching fish to be able to come out and be able to harvest some of those fish before they end up dying and basically going to waste,” Mondragon said.
During the emergency fish salvage order, anglers can take all species of fish from the lake, except for endangered species.
They can take fish through several methods, including gig, snagging, grabbing, dip net, throw net, seine, and by hand. All other permit, season, and limit requirements remain in effect.
Mondragon said in order for repairs to be made, the lake will have to be drained.
“They’ll see the brown signs around the lake that have the regulations,” he said. “As far as daily limits and what species they can harvest, they can take home bass, bluegill, channel catfish, crappie, redear sunfish, and I’ve heard rumors there are some big flathead in the lake also.”
The order is in effect through September 30.
