Jackson County citizens won’t be voting on a proposal that would have created a Chiefs-only sales tax.

The Jackson County Legislature voted five-to-four against a measure that would have levied a 1/4th of 1% tax on sales throughout Jackson County. Proceeds would have been used to either build a new stadium for the Kansas City Chiefs or fund renovations to Arrowhead Stadium.

Jackson County voters in April defeated a proposed 3/8th percent sales tax extension that would have funded stadium efforts by both the Chiefs and the Kansas City Royals, who want to build a new baseball stadium.

Gov. Mike Parson, meanwhile, said one of his goals before leaving office in January is to have some sort of state aid package put together that would persuade both teams to remain in Missouri. The state of Kansas recently authorized an incentives package to try and lure both the Chiefs and Royals to their side of the border.
