A large, century-old stained-glass window removed from the Missouri Capitol Rotunda nearly two years ago is being restored and should be back in place soon. Andrew Friedmeyer, Project Manager for the Missouri Capitol Complex, said planning for the restoration began five years ago when pieces of stained glass fell to the floor.
“The first phase of construction began in October of 2022 when large sections of stained glass were carefully removed from the steel frame, lowered to the ground, and packaged for shipping,” he told Missourinet. “This 100-year-old piece of stained glass had not really had an extensive renovation or restoration job in nearly 100 years.
Friedmeyer said the restoration project costs about $4.5 million dollars, while the value of the stained glass window itself exceeds $17 million.
“During construction, which is going on right now, these very nicely restored pieces of glass are coming back from California, where they were restored from Judson studios, a very prominent stained glass conservator, and brought back to Jefferson City for this reinstallation,” he said.
Freedmeyer says that the stained glass being restored depicts the sun in the center, surrounded by the 12 zodiac signs. It also depicts agriculture, animals native to Missouri, patriotic symbols, and renaissance art and architecture.
