Missouri has 70 delegates representing the Show-Me State at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago. They include Chade Shorten of northern Missouri’s Kirksville.
The one-time President of the Young Democrats of Missouri was seen donning a “Demobrat” pin. She explained to Missourinet what it means and how it applies to Vice President Kamala Harris on social media sites like TikTok and Instagram.
“I think it’s very inspiring that we get to interact with these people in a way that communicates across the younger generations and people online about who these candidates are and what they do,” she said. “You can kind of apply their policies and who they are to a lot of different ways to get that messaging across.”
Urban Dictionary defined Demobrats as “the childish behavior of the Democratic Party,” but there could be something to that as Harris has developed a campaign strategy to get the Millennial and Generation Z vote by targeting social media.
Shorten said that the strategy is designed to engage with younger voters.
“The whole brat ‘Kamala is brat,’ ‘demobrat,’ the coconut tree concepts, it really, the messaging is where that comes into play so much.”
Through capitalizing on viral trends, the strategy is designed to make Harris seem more relevant to younger voters.
This mark’s Shorten’s second time serving as a Democratic delegate, but first time in person as 2020’s convention was virtual due to COVID-19.
Republican Donald Trump, meanwhile, appears to be taking advantage of X, formerly known as Twitter, as a means of trying to reach out to perspective voters. Trump returned to the social media site after billionaire Elon Musk bought Twitter in 2022. He also communicates to voters through TRUTH Social after he was banned from Twitter and Facebook in 2021.
The convention runs through Thursday.
