The state has stripped a Missouri sheriff of his law enforcement license after an investigation into suspected misuse of prisoners. State Attorney General Andrew Bailey’s office has reached a settlement with Ray County Sheriff Scott Childers, resulting in his resignation.
Bailey filed a lawsuit last year and opened an investigation into the allegations against Childers. The investigation found that Childers allowed multiple prisoners, including those accused of sexual assault, to leave or be released from jail.
“This outcome is a major win for the residents of Ray County who have been forced to watch the perpetrators of their crimes roam freely in their communities due to the negligent actions of those sworn to protect them,” said Bailey.
According to the attorney general, the prisoners were allowed to work at the sheriff’s home and on the property of friends and acquaintances. Bailey said Childers let prisoners drive vehicles, leave the state, and move freely about the county without supervision.
The sheriff let inmates bring drugs, alcohol, cellphones, weapons, and other illegal items into the jail.

Meanwhile, Childers was seen in this video showing support for Bailey’s Republican primary election opponent, Will Scharf.
