With less than 100 days before the November election to determine who America’s next president will be, Missouri’s delegates are in Chicago, Illinois for the Democratic National Convention. They are on tap to formally nominate Vice President Kamala Harris for president and verify Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz for vice president.

Rep. Ashley Aune, D-Kansas City, is there stumping for Harris.

“I want to be careful to not describe this as some folks are as, you know, just simply a coronation of the person who is already on the ticket because that’s not the only reason Kamala Harris is going to be our nominee,” Aune told Missourinet. “It’s really because she’s the best person for the job.”

On the flip side, some Republicans have alleged that President Joe Biden was “forced out” of the race, thereby “ignoring” the voice of millions of Democrats.

“She’s been in the White House for the last four years working alongside our president to deliver some of the most comprehensive bipartisan packages that our country has seen in years,” she said. “Those qualifications, in addition to everything she’s done leading up to this moment, makes for the best person for this job.”

But it’s not just about pledging support for the Harris-Walz ticket. It’s also about ushering in new and younger voices, as Biden referenced when he ended his reelection bid. Aune said that it’s important that Biden stopped his campaign for that reason.

“It shows a few things. I think, one, it shows the humility that Joe Biden has brought to this position for the past four years and understanding what he brings to the table and also his own limitations,” she said. “The Democratic Party heard their voices, heard their concerns and took them seriously and said ‘okay, what’s right for the party and what’s right for the country is to move forward with a new generation of ideas and voices to lead our country,’ and frankly, we don’t see this very often in Washington.”

Missouri has 70 delegates serving at this year’s convention. Delegates will vote on the party’s platform.

The Missouri Democratic State Committee and the Missouri Biden delegation have endorsed Harris for president.

The Democratic National Convention continues through Thursday in Chicago, Illinois.
