The Democratic National Convention begins Monday in Chicago. After President Joe Biden abruptly dropped out of the presidential race one month ago, Vice President Kamala Harris is poised to be at the top of the ticket.
Sen. Karla May, D-St. Louis, is one of Missouri’s lawmakers that will be serving as a delegate at the convention. She argued against Republican accusations that Biden was “forced out” of the race – ignoring the voice of millions of Democrats.
“I don’t believe that he was forced out,” she told Missourinet. “I think that he made a calculated decision that he was going to put party and country first and he’s done that on numerous times over his career and I think that’s the decision that he made at that time.”
Delegates at the convention will vote on the party’s platform and formally nominate Harris for president and verify her choice of Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz for vice president for the November election.
May anticipates that one of the main campaign messages to come out of this year’s convention is women’s reproductive health rights.
May is excited about this year’s convention because the one she served at in 2020 was virtual. She thinks that, since Harris has become the democratic presidential nominee, the party will unify in support of Harris.
“I’ve noticed it’s a lot of excitement surrounding this Chicago convention,” said May. “It’s a lot of excitement surrounding the Kamala and Walz ticket. So, I’m very excited about it and I think that the party is going to come together and she’s going to lay out what our future and our plan is going to be and we’re going to execute it.”
May is of the belief that the country is calling for “stabilization” under a Harris presidency.
“We do not want to go into a dictatorship,” said May. “We do not want our democracy destroyed in the United States. This ticket is our answer to stabilizing our future as the United States of America.”
Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Whatley and Co-Chairman Lara Trump released a statement saying, “Every single failure we’ve seen from Joe Biden – the Afghanistan withdrawal, a border crisis, crushing inflation, and America weakened abroad – has been delivered hand-in-hand with Kamala Harris.”
The convention begins at 5:30 p.m. Monday evening and continues through Thursday.
